SINTEF Energi AS
Description :
SINTEF Energi AS is an applied research institute dedicated to developing innovative energy solutions. It specialises in cutting-edge, research-based knowledge and infrastructure, both in Norway and internationally, with the aim of providing clients with solutions and services that create value and strengthen their competitive position.
SINTEF Energi AS is part of the SINTEF Group, one of Europe’s largest independent research organisations. SINTEF is a non-profit research foundation, meaning that no owners can withdraw dividends; financial surpluses are instead reinvested in scientific equipment and expertise. The institute’s focus areas contribute to the transition towards sustainable energy systems of the future:
• Smart grids
• Power transmission
• Integrated energy systems
• Offshore wind
• Energy efficiency
• Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
• Hydropower
• Bioenergy
• Hydrogen
• Zero-emission transport
In close collaboration with NTNU, SINTEF Energi AS has access to more than 12,000 m² of laboratory facilities, including the SINTEF Energy Lab.
Role :
Apart from being involved in all major Work Packages as contributor, SINTEF leads WP2 and is involved in key modelling activities in the project, including the development of the PowerVision market simulator and advanced tools for analysing multi-market operation, revenue streams, and grid integration of long-duration energy storage.
It contributes to techno-economic modelling, digital twin development, and validation of results using real operational data, while adapting and applying these tools to Norwegian conditions and replication cases. In addition, SINTEF supports business model development, policy and regulatory analysis, and stakeholder engagement to ensure scalable, real-world deployment of storage solutions.
Team members

Andrei Morch
Senior Research Scientist – Andrei Morch works in the Smart Grids domain and several related interdisciplinary areas, including demand-side management, balancing reserves, capacity markets, and TSO–DSO interactions. He is the primary contact for SINTEF Energi AS in the PowerMax project, where he also leads Task 6.3.

Stefan Jaehnert
Research manager / Senior research scientist – Stefan leads the research group “Power markets”, which has a special focus on operation planning for hydropower including operation of long-term storage under uncertainty. His research interest is within market-grid, market design and applied optimization methods. He is the leader for WP2 in the PowerMax project.
