HYDRO ONE
Description :
Hydro One is Ontario’s largest electricity transmission and distribution service provider. Hydro One distributes electricity across Ontario to nearly 1.5 million predominantly rural customers, or approximately 26% of the total number of customers in Ontario.
Role :
Hydro One will serve as the utility partner, providing distribution system expertise, grid integration support, and operational validation for the Ontario Distributed Long-Duration Battery Storage (DLDS) demonstration. Hydro One will identify and assess candidate pilot locations by targeting feeders with existing or anticipated capacity constraints where distributed flexibility can deliver the greatest system value. Hydro One will lead DER connection impact assessments, support SCADA and telemetry integration, and evaluate the effectiveness of distributed battery storage as a Non-Wires Solution (NWS) to defer or avoid traditional distribution infrastructure investments. The project will demonstrate how coordinated demand response and battery dispatch can reduce peak demand, alleviate feeder congestion, improve asset utilization, enhance grid reliability and flexibility, and support Ontario's electrification and grid modernization objectives.

Dhaval Patel
Sr Engineer – As a Senior Engineer in the Planning Department, I am interested in the application of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), electrification, smart grid technologies, and Non-Wires Solutions (NWS) to enhance grid reliability, optimize infrastructure investments, and enable the integration of emerging technologies that support a more flexible, resilient, and sustainable energy system. My research interests focus on the modernization and decarbonization of the energy sector through innovative technologies and integrated energy solutions. Key areas of interest include electric vehicles and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies, the performance and operation of heat pumps in cold-climate applications, DERs and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for delivering stackable benefits, and smart grid technologies that facilitate the reliable and efficient integration of distributed energy resources and electrification loads.

Michael Medeiros
Sr. Manager, Distribution Investment Planning – Michael Medeiros is a Senior Manager at Hydro One with over 25 years of experience in transmission and distribution. He leads a team whose mission is to enable the energy transition by unlocking grid capacity through innovative, data-driven solutions. Focused on distribution planning, Michael’s team implements Non-Wires Alternatives that leverage energy storage, demand response, and local flexibility markets to meet system needs through load management. In addition, the team uses advanced meter data to understand the impact of EV charging and the electrification of residential loads, helping to plan for future demand while ensuring a reliable and sustainable grid for customers.
